Urbanisation & Rural-Urban Migration
There is emerging evidence to suggest that rural-urban migration has important benefits that can assist in poverty reduction, which dominant development and policy discourses often overlook. These include resource and skills transfers to sending communities, business development and improved trade and access to social services. The Migrating out of Poverty RPC is organising an international conference, Urbanisation & Rural- Urban Migration in sub-Saharan Africa 26-27 November 2012 in Nairobi to discuss these issues.
Hosted by Migrating out of Poverty’s east African partner, the African Migration and Development Policy Centre (AMADPOC), the conference will bring together researchers to discuss four themes: urbanisation data and trends; the role of urbanisation in poverty reduction; youth migration and urban vulnerabilities; urban governance and service provision. Prominent speakers include: John Oucho, Director, AMADPOC; Priya Deshingkar, Research Director of the Migrating out of Poverty RPC; Loren Landau, Director, African Centre for Migration and Society (ACMS); Mariama Awumbila, Director, Centre for Migration Studies (CMS), University of Ghana; and Samuel Codjoe, Deputy Director of the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS), University of Ghana.
